Coconut Oil and Basenjis

Coconut oil and basenjisI received the following warning from Dr Aine Seavers in relation to Coconut oil and Basenjis.

Hi all
It has come to my attention from clients in general that the internet is currently pushing coconut oil as a treatment - topical and oral - for so many ailments.

This oil must not be fed to Basenjis of any age but especially the old and especially in cold weather when we are most at risk of the dogs throwing 'strokes' or CVAs.

Coconut oil has always been associated with hardening of the arteries and clots - something most dogs are not at risk of - but they can be and I suspect Basenjis do have this problem due to low normal thyroid and high normal cholesterol and haematocrit.

The reference below is from the 1970s which shows you how long this has been known but yet ignored by Dr Internet!

"Thrombosis in association with atherosclerosis induced by dietary perturbations in dogs R Mahley, AW Nelson, VJ Ferrans, DL Fry ABSTRACT:
The distribution, severity, and complications of diet-induced atherosclerosis in dogs can be altered by changing the source of fat in the diet. Thrombosis and thromboembolic disease associated with atherosclerosis occurred with diets containing beef tallow and lard of coconut oil but were absent in dogs fed cottonseed oil as a source of fat. Experimental animals with and without thrombosis are of value as models in elucidating the role of platelets and thrombostatic mechanisms in atherosclerosis."

Happy 16 Birthday Meja

Heres to a very happy 16 birthday Meja - my oldie - Ch Tambuzi The Tamperer (AI). Meja is progeny from my very first litter and was born 16 May 1999. Her sire Am Ch Jamila's Madahiro Re (SDHR) and her dam Ch Tamsala Fire And Ice.

Meja's photos (below) were taken in March 2015 - on top of a wood stack which was the only way to keep her still. The dam is a wonderful setting for photos but seeing how she ran home twice during the 'photo shoot' - I was puffed out running back to get her (she was fine) - I gave up on that one. Meja is slightly OCD when it comes to doors - she loves opening them! This includes my fridge (a wonderful trick learnt from her mother) and the screen door - to come back in - yes you heard right - back into the house. Meja still can hold her own in the pack and adores puppies - she endeavoured to suckle my last litter, but found she is a little 'long in the tooth' for that operation - so whilst mum fed Meja cleaned - team effort!

Halle – ACES Eye Examination

Halle had a routine ACES eye examination today. Very pleased to report that Dr Robin Stanley's conclusion was that Halle's eyes are completely normal with no PPM of any kind. Halle was one of the first Australian Basenjis to be tested by the OFA for late on-set PRA (by DNA analysis) with a normal result. Halle will have one last ACES test when she is 10-12 years old.

2015 Puppies at Tambuzi?

The Basenji season came exactly a month early at Tambuzi. With Sierra followed by Willow then Halle coming into season. Obviously they had not looked at the calendar! There is much debate about the Basenji, which estrus once a year unlike its domestic counterpart which have two seasons each year. Is the season linked to the number of daylight hours, temperature, food availability or rainfall? Here in central Victoria we have had a very long spell without any 'ground wetting' rain. There isn't any green grass to be found in fact most of the dead shoots have been eaten by birds so the property resembles a ploughed field. Other plants are dead or struggling but that is much like most other years. Days are bright and sunny again most like the average. Temperature has been fairly consistent, we had a number of extreme temperature days earlier in the year.

A mating for Halle (Grand Champion Tambuzi At Light Speed), which will be her last had been well considered. Last year, after seeing him at the Victorian Basenji Specialty, I decided I would approach Ethel Blair of Wuliango Basenjis in Qld to use her dog Ch Wuliango Sweet Dandelion (AI) (Leo). At the Victorian Basenji Specialty in 2014 Leo came in second to my Harry being of a similar type with what the judge considered in her critique as having better angulation than those placed lower in the class. I felt that he would meld well with Halle. Leo's magnificent pedigree was also a consideration in my selection. I have admired American Grand Ch Reveille Push The Limit To MC SDHR (grand sire) for quite sometime. Although I have not seen photos of all his litter mates all 6 became champions of grand champions. Of those I have seen American Grand Ch Reveille Push Button and American Ch Tricycle Two are also quality Basenjis and a credit to their breeder Damara Bolte. The quality of the pedigree continues with Am Ch C-Quest's Just Push Play SDHR, Am Ch Reveille Boutonniere SDHR and further back Am Ch Djakomba's Spotlight SDHR to name just a few. Then to add a little of the 'unknown' Leos grandmother Avongara Luka is a recent export from Barango, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Health was another key consideration with both Halle and Leo being normal for fanconi syndrome and late on-set progressive retinal atrophy and Halle being normal for pyruvate kinase deficient (Leo's test results pending) thus eliminating the prospect of one of the puppies being affected by any of these diseases. Hips and eyes have also been evaluated all with very good results.

Halle progressed her season very quickly with an unusually (for her) steep rise in her progesterone level and was ready before the flight to Brisbane was booked. As a 'plan B' not knowing if it would be 'too late' when we eventually got to Brisbane I mated Oscar (Tambuzi Totally Taboo) to Halle. However, the likelihood of this mating 'taking' is extremely slim. I did a similar double mating in 2010 and on that occasion Oscar did not produce any offspring. All puppies I breed are DNA profiled at about 6 weeks, at the time the microchips are implanted, so identifying parents is not difficult exercise. All puppies will be sold with a parentage verification.

It will be a few weeks before we know if the breeding has been successful. More about this breeding can be reviewed here.

Basenji Club Victoria Specialty 2015 – 7 March

The Basenji Club Victoria Specialty was held on the 7 March 2015. Breed classes and Best in Show were judged by Mrs Noel Baaser (Mutabaruga Basenjis, Germany). Tambuzi was represented by Ringo, Arthur & Willow. Along with Colleen's Ch Tambuzi The Sherpaof Annapurna (Tobi). Also Lisa's Ch Tambuzi The Rinpocheof Qinghai (Ruby). All with respectable results:

  • Tobi was awarded second place in the state bred dog class.
  • Arthur was awarded second place in the intermediate dog class.
  • Ruby was awarded first place in the state bred bitch class and then Best State Bred in Show.  Beating the reserve challenge dog Ch Afrikenji Hunting High And Low for the win and in doing so beating all the dogs entered other than the challenge winner who eventually went runner up in show.
  • Willow was awarded first place in the Australian bred bitch class and was awarded Opposite Australian Bred in Show. The Best Australian Bred in Show Ch Bkela Kobi Askari was also the runner up best in show.

Berwick and District A&H Society 2015

I was delighted to be asked to judge the hound group (group 4) at the Berwick and District A&H Society Championship show which took place on the 21 February 2015.  Considering DOGS Victoria has also programmed a double championship show less than 80km away at the Bulla Complex the 542 total entries at this show was an excellent result. General Specials would be judged by Mr W Mooney (VIC)

I was very pleased with the 63 entries in the hound group with Whippets being the biggest breed with 21 entries. Judging commenced at 8.30am, thankfully as it was bound to be a very hot day. I was very pleased to award my best in group to the Saluki, Ch Tiana Cressida owned by A&M Watt and bred by Sue Perkins. A beautiful exhibit, who I had considered for group more than a year ago. The time had given her some maturity and her type, balance, movement and foot fall was first class. She wasn't concerned by the heat. And she had the ring presence to cap off a well deserved win. The Saluki was automatic Best Australian Bred in Group. Runner Up in Group went to the Whippet Ch Rosiel Pax Tothe Rafters owned by N Harris and A Wills and bred by A Wills. He was also form the Australian Bed Class. Best Baby Puppy in Group went to the Rhodesian Ridgeback Kipsigis Chokozi owned and bred by G Jane, surprisingly the only baby exhibited. Best Minor went to the Whippet Ingwe When Irish Eyes R Smilin owned and bred by Ingwe Kennels She later went on to Best Minor Puppy in show. Best Puppy in Group went to the Afghan Alaqadar Wellington owned by C Mibus and bred by Alaqadar Kennels. He went on to be awarded Best Puppy in Show. My best Junior in Group was the Rhodesian Ridgeback Huntingbridge All Overthe World (AI) owned by King & Brennan and bred by D Brennan. Intermediate in Group went to the Whippet Ch Rosiel Royal Secret owned by N Harris and A Wills and bred by A Wills. She went on to win Best Intermediate in Show - the third of my class in groups to be awarded a class in show award, Given Mr Mooney is a whippet breeder/judge this was a very nice result. I later discovered that my Whippet Best of Breed and Runner Up of Breed were litter mates out of NZ & Aust BISS Ch Rosiel Royal Scandal who I have previously awarded top group awards to. Best Open in Group went to the Foxhound Gr Ch Foxgully Perfectly Timed owned and bred by K&K Austin.

I had a wonderful day at Berwick. And was pleased to go over some quality dogs. I was particularly pleased with the whippets with, in my opinion, some very promising young dogs and bitches coming on.

South Eastern Kennel Club 2014 – 9 January

Officiating at the South Eastern Kennel Club 2014 championship show for the Hound Group was Ms Mariko Harasa (Japan). From observation it appeared the judge had a keen eye on front construction with correct angulation and good fill, not too narrow and movement. Against lovely competition I was delighted that Ms Harasa awarded all of my entries first in class. With Best of Breed to Ch Tambuzi The Isle Of Avalon (Arthur) and Runner Up Best of Breed and Best Minor Puppy in Group to Ch Tambuzi The Secret of Roan Inish (Willow). Reserve bitch challenge went to Ch Tambuzi The Rinpocheof Qinghai (Ruby)

Dogs Victoria Amenities Show 2014 – 30 December

At tonight's Dogs Victoria Amenities Show 2014 the hound group was judged by Mr George Gaut (Vic). Mr Gaut awarded Best of Breed to Ch Tambuzi The Secret of Roan Inish (Willow) and Runner Up Best of Breed to  Ch Tambuzi The Isle Of Avalon (Arthur). It was the first time back in the ring after several months for Ch Tambuzi The Rinpocheof Qinghai (Ruby). However, rather unfortunately she went lame. When I examined her paw whilst the other bitch in the class was being examined. I found she had a rather nasty gash in her pad.
