There are four distinct periods during which a puppy develops both physically but more importantly emotionally. Three of these periods are often referred to as "critical" periods (points 2-4 below)

1.Prenatal. Most research, to date, has been completed on rats, however through logical assumption one has to deduce that that environmental factors which effect a pregnant bitch will also effect the development of her unborn pups' minds. Research shows that various emotions or environmental factors during certain terms of the pregnancy can have an effect on the behaviour of offspring. I apply the knowledge I have gained to ensure that the mother's emotions and behaviour are monitored during pregancy.

2.The Neonatal Period 0-2 weeks. In short the pups mind is hardly developed, it a time that the mother has the most influence on the puppies; her behaviour during this time with have an influence on the pups behaviour later in life. However correct knowledge of human interaction during this period can also be influential.

3.The Transitional Period 2-4 weeks
. The pups senses become active, the pups start to play and interact with one another. The pups are still learning from the mother but correct human interaction becomes more important. During this stage of development the pups' are made ready both physically and psychologically for the next phase of developemt.

4.Socialisation Period - to dogs 4-6 weeks, - to humans 4-12 weeks
This period is crucial period the pups are now at their peak for receiving and processing the information that will shape temperament and character. Puppies generally go to their new homes from 8 weeks so time is of the essence to ensure your puppy receives the socialisation required to produce a balanced adult. I offer my puppy buyers as much of my knowledge as possible and as required. Incorrect management of your puppy during this period, even if it seems that you are doing the right thing, can have a lasting negative impact on the pups behaviour patterns in later life. Knowing how to socialise your pup correctly, knowing how to communicate, knowing how build your pups confidence and to desensitise your pup to its new environment and his critical distance is vital during this period.
