Tambuzi Basenjis

Basenji Breeders Victoria Australia

Preserving the Past, Present & Future

Tambuzi Basenjis; Basenji Breeders Victoria Australia is kennel devoted to this ancient dog breed. In Swahili Tambuzi  means intelligent, shrewd, clever, astute, quick-witted. This seemed to sum up the Basenji completely. I thought Tambuzi to be the perfect kennel name for this breed. I welcome you to browse through this website.  Review information about my Basenjis, health information, history, my breeding plans, links and resources. I am a member and registered breeder of DOGS Victoria please contact office@dogsvictoria.org.au to verify my membership. My Victorian Government Pet Exchange Register source number is RB128637. Should you have any questions about this truly unique breed, please do not hesitate to contact me.

LATEST NEWS

Halle – ACES Eye Examination

Halle had a routine ACES eye examination today. Very pleased to report that Dr Robin Stanley's conclusion was that Halle's eyes are completely normal with no PPM of any kind. Halle was one of the first Australian Basenjis to be tested by the OFA for late on-set PRA (by DNA analysis) with a normal result. Halle will have one last ACES test when she is 10-12 years old.

2015 Puppies at Tambuzi?

The Basenji season came exactly a month early at Tambuzi. With Sierra followed by Willow then Halle coming into season. Obviously they had not looked at the calendar! There is much debate about the Basenji, which estrus once a year unlike its domestic counterpart which have two seasons each year. Is the season linked to the number of daylight hours, temperature, food availability or rainfall? Here in central Victoria we have had a very long spell without any 'ground wetting' rain. There isn't any green grass to be found in fact most of the dead shoots have been eaten by birds so the property resembles a ploughed field. Other plants are dead or struggling but that is much like most other years. Days are bright and sunny again most like the average. Temperature has been fairly consistent, we had a number of extreme temperature days earlier in the year.

A mating for Halle (Grand Champion Tambuzi At Light Speed), which will be her last had been well considered. Last year, after seeing him at the Victorian Basenji Specialty, I decided I would approach Ethel Blair of Wuliango Basenjis in Qld to use her dog Ch Wuliango Sweet Dandelion (AI) (Leo). At the Victorian Basenji Specialty in 2014 Leo came in second to my Harry being of a similar type with what the judge considered in her critique as having better angulation than those placed lower in the class. I felt that he would meld well with Halle. Leo's magnificent pedigree was also a consideration in my selection. I have admired American Grand Ch Reveille Push The Limit To MC SDHR (grand sire) for quite sometime. Although I have not seen photos of all his litter mates all 6 became champions of grand champions. Of those I have seen American Grand Ch Reveille Push Button and American Ch Tricycle Two are also quality Basenjis and a credit to their breeder Damara Bolte. The quality of the pedigree continues with Am Ch C-Quest's Just Push Play SDHR, Am Ch Reveille Boutonniere SDHR and further back Am Ch Djakomba's Spotlight SDHR to name just a few. Then to add a little of the 'unknown' Leos grandmother Avongara Luka is a recent export from Barango, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Health was another key consideration with both Halle and Leo being normal for fanconi syndrome and late on-set progressive retinal atrophy and Halle being normal for pyruvate kinase deficient (Leo's test results pending) thus eliminating the prospect of one of the puppies being affected by any of these diseases. Hips and eyes have also been evaluated all with very good results.

Halle progressed her season very quickly with an unusually (for her) steep rise in her progesterone level and was ready before the flight to Brisbane was booked. As a 'plan B' not knowing if it would be 'too late' when we eventually got to Brisbane I mated Oscar (Tambuzi Totally Taboo) to Halle. However, the likelihood of this mating 'taking' is extremely slim. I did a similar double mating in 2010 and on that occasion Oscar did not produce any offspring. All puppies I breed are DNA profiled at about 6 weeks, at the time the microchips are implanted, so identifying parents is not difficult exercise. All puppies will be sold with a parentage verification.

It will be a few weeks before we know if the breeding has been successful. More about this breeding can be reviewed here.

Basenji Club Victoria Specialty 2015 – 7 March

The Basenji Club Victoria Specialty was held on the 7 March 2015. Breed classes and Best in Show were judged by Mrs Noel Baaser (Mutabaruga Basenjis, Germany). Tambuzi was represented by Ringo, Arthur & Willow. Along with Colleen's Ch Tambuzi The Sherpaof Annapurna (Tobi). Also Lisa's Ch Tambuzi The Rinpocheof Qinghai (Ruby). All with respectable results:

  • Tobi was awarded second place in the state bred dog class.
  • Arthur was awarded second place in the intermediate dog class.
  • Ruby was awarded first place in the state bred bitch class and then Best State Bred in Show.  Beating the reserve challenge dog Ch Afrikenji Hunting High And Low for the win and in doing so beating all the dogs entered other than the challenge winner who eventually went runner up in show.
  • Willow was awarded first place in the Australian bred bitch class and was awarded Opposite Australian Bred in Show. The Best Australian Bred in Show Ch Bkela Kobi Askari was also the runner up best in show.

SPECIFIC INTERESTS

  • Health, Wellbeing & Temperament

The health and wellbeing of the Basenjis I breed has always been and will continue to be a top priority. Veterinary science is an ever changing landscape of improvement and new technology. The advent of breed specific DNA tests such as the DNA test for Fanconi Syndrome has given breeders additional tools in the rearing of healthy puppies. I have developed a health management program that maximises the use of available DNA tests and scientifically valid screening methods. I am an authorised DNA collector for Orivet Genetic Pet Care.

Temperament is equally important. The importance of well balanced socialisation in the first 14 weeks of a pup's life cannot be over emphasized. I have developed my own process of nurturing puppies which begins before they are born. Although my methods may not be unique they work for me. Basenjis bred by Tambuzi have exceptional temperaments.

  • Dog Showing and Judging

I enjoy dog showing as a hobby. Of course, we always enjoy coming home with a Best of Breed ribbon. I am a member of the Victorian Basenji Breed Association and DOGS Victoria. Tambuzi continues to be successful in the show ring. Supreme Ch Tambuzi The Secret Society is a mutli All Breeds Best in Show winner and Multi Runner-Up in Speciality Show Winner. Supreme Ch Tambuzi Seven Streams Of Somar is also a multi All Breeds Best in Show Winner.  Grand Ch Tambuzi At Light Speed was my first Grand Champion and at the time the youngest female Basenji to attain that title. Her daughter Ch Tambuzi The Rinpoche of Qinghai attained her champion title in just 7 months and 1 week.

My involvement in the dog world has extended to judging. Passing theory and practical assessments to judge the Hound, Toy, Gundog and Terrier Groups at championship show level. I have had the pleasure of judging in in every state of Australia. Including the Southern Region of NSW Hound Specialty in 2010. I am now studying the Non-Sporting (have passed all my theory exams) and Utility Groups.

  • Progressive & Forward Thinking

Progressive thinking, the ability to change and take on board new and exciting technology are aspirations of Tambuzi Basenjis. Tambuzi is the first Australian Basenji kennel to utilize state-of-the-art genetic technology, Optimal Selection™  which I commenced using in 2012. Pilot studies carried out have shown an increase in average litter numbers. A reduction in disease and greater genetic diversity. As time goes by, with continuing research and development, one can only imagine how tools such as Optimal Selection™  will assist breeders in the future.

  • Information & Assistance

I often received emails and calls with questions and concerns from Basenji owners. This has been in my capacity as a breeder and owner of this unique breed. Also in my position as Secretary of the Victorian Basenji Breed Assoc. I am more than happy to try and assist Basenji owners with any questions they might have. If I can't help immediately I will research and ask some other long time breeders. Please feel free to make contact with me.

NEXT PLANNED LITTER

The next planned litters at Tambuzi will be bred in 2022. At this stage the matings are not confirmed.

BASENJIS ARE DIFFERENT TO MOST DOG BREEDS

We don’t bark

nobark

Basenji generally don't bark. Their larynx is shaped slightly differently to other dogs. The breed is capable of making a multitude of other sounds and noises. Most notably a yodeling 'howl' or barooo when they are happy.

We have one season per year

Unlike most domestic breeds the Basenji retains some of its wild ancestory and like the wolf it only seasons annually. Basenji puppies are generally born in winter.

We clean ourselves like cats

Basenji are meticulous about being clean. They preen them selves like a cat. They also do not have a 'doggie' odour, rather they pick up the smells around them.
